Model 2162 Spectrometer

The Model 2162 is a 2 meter scanning spectrometer. The optical system used is a modified Czerny-Turner type. (U.S. Pat. 3,390,848) Due to the absorption of the atmosphere, this instrument has a practical short wavelength limit of approximately 2000 Å; however, the housing is designed for purging with dry inert gases.

The standard instrument is supplied as a monochromator. With a 1200 G/mm, 110 x 110 mm ruled area grating installed, the instrument will produce a first order reciprocal linear dispersion of approximately 4.15 Å/mm and have a wavelength from central image to 10,000 Å.

The wavelength range of the Model 2162 can be extended to approximately 15,116 Å (with a 1200 G/mm grating) by initially rotating the grating 30° on the rotary table and quill assembly. This is accomplished by removing the grating holder assembly and rotating it to an additional set of positioning holes.

The grating assemblies are "snap-in" type, interchanged directly into the instrument. (U.S. Pat. #3,433,557) Gratings are available with 3600, 2400, 1800, 1200, 600 and 300 G/mm. Other gratings available on request.

With the 600 G/mm grating installed, the first order reciprocal linear dispersion would be approximately 8.3 Å/mm, with a wavelength coverage from central image to 20,000 Å. With the 300 G/mm grating installed the first order reciprocal linear dispersion would be approximately 16.6 Å/mm with a wavelength coverage from central image to 40,000 Å.

A bilateral entrance slit is provided and is continuously adjustable from 5 to 4000 mm. Below the entrance slit is an accessory bar (optional) for mounting lenses, light sources, etc. Sources may also be bolted directly to the entrance slit body. A bilateral exit slit is provided and is continuously adjustable from 5 to 4000 mm. Detectors may be bolted directly to the exit slit body.

A stepping motor and controller option (Model 789A-3) provides reversible scanning speeds 0.1 to 999.9 Å/min.

A mechanical wavelength counter is provided that indicates the wavelength appearing at the exit slit. This counter reads directly in Ångstrom units for a 1200 G/mm grating installed.
