Artist's impression of the H-1NF heliac showing the plasma (red), the copper electromagnet coils jacketed in stainless steel, the bare copper high current conductors, the support structure (large tubing) and the smaller water cooling pipes.

Electron Cyclotron Heating

This 200 kilowatt millimetre wave power source (28GHz gyrotron), on loan from Kyoto University, is used to heat electrons to temperatures of several million K.

The complete heating system, valued near $1M and weighing several tonnes, is a major part of the collaboration between the Japanese National Institute for Fusion Science and the ANU.

RF Plasma Production and Heating

This is an rf antenna to launch the "fast Alfven wave" into the plasma to heat ions or electrons, depending on the conditions. Several hundred kilowatts of rf power in the range 4-26MHz can be expected to heat the plasma so that the pressure ratio "beta" approaches 1%.
