Research Interests and Expertise

Materials science and engineering of organic functional materials and structures for photonics and bio-electronics:
- Design, modification, processing and measurements of optical, spectroscopic, and nonlinear optical properties of molecular materials to provide useful information for development of advanced materials and structures for innovative light technologies
- DNA-based nanocomposites explored for nonlinear optical effects, negative index, chiral, electrochromic, magnetic properties and sensing
- Development of polymers with in-built nonlinear optical chromophores, π-conjugated polymer films with high values of the nonlinear refractive index, organic-inorganic glasses obtained with sol-gel routes, manufacturing of thermoplastic materials and polymer optical fibres, purification and growth of molecular crystals, preparation of hybrid polymer composites, nanoparticles, and nanocomposites with wet-chemistry methods
- Characterization of materials with physico-chemical laboratory techniques and instrumental analysis
- Light guiding and attenuation in waveguiding films and polymer optical fibres, control of optical modes and optical losses in the wavelength region of interest with waveguide structure, material composition and manufacturing
Laser-induced nonlinear optical effects in materials:
- Second-order nonlinear optical effects: second harmonic generation and Pockels effect in polar crystals, polymer films and polymer optical fibres
- Third-order nonlinear optical effects, nonlinear refractive index, two-photon absorption, and nonlinear fluorescence in materials measured with femtosecond pulsed lasers: degenerate four wave mixing and Z-scan; a strong enhancement of the nonlinearity was observed in molecules with increasing number of conjugated units
