The ANU X-Ray Microcomputed Tomograph (XCT)

Description of the facility

In 2004, the Department of Applied Mathematics greatly extended its experimental capabilities with the completion of a custom XCT, constructed in-house. This instrument is capable of imaging materials with a wide variety of densities and sizes. From 5cm cores of rock, imaged at 20 micron resolution, down to samples less than 5mm across, imaged with a voxel size of less than 2 microns. The facility is undergoing continuous refinement and improvement, and will soon be upgraded to improve resolution and decrease acquisition time.

Images and movies

As of mid-2006, nearly 1000 samples have been imaged at the facility. We work closely with the ANU Vizlab, who have produced a stunning array of images and movies that give a special insight into the data that\'s generated.
