2. TUES 17th Nov: Reconciliation in the ACT Study Circle, 6pm

The twice monthly Study Circle, facilitated by Chris Lothian, will be happening this Tuesday (17th) at 6pm in the Boomerang Centre, Currajong Flats (Block B) in Currong St, Braddon. This week's will be an open discussion.

3. A Weekend with the Jerrinja People of Jervis Bay, 21-22 Nov.

You are invited to a fantastic weekend with members of the Jerrinja people who live on the northern side of Jervis Bay. Their community housing is at Orient Point, but the weekend will be spent camping with them on some of their traditional land at Bindijine Beach, part of Jervis Bay National Park. Bindijine Beach has special cultural significance for women, but is open to men and women.

You will learn about their long struggle to save Jervis Bay, and get access to their land. You will also hear about the current processes going on in relation to their Native Title Claim and their negotiations about their rights within Jervis Bay which has recently been declared a Marine Park. They are seeking to protect their sacred sites and their traditional hunting, fishing and gathering activities.

The weekend will include walks around the area to learn about the stories, sites, and bush foods. There will also be opportunities to swim and relax - and eat damper made on the spot.

Our host will be chairperson of the Jerrinja Land Council, Delia Lowe, assisted by several others.

WHEN? The weekend of 21-22 November, leaving Canberra Friday evening, returning Sunday evening. We will try to pool cars to drive down there to save costs and the environment!

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO BRING: You will need to bring all your own camping requirements - tents, sleeping mat/bag, etc.

FOOD: We will cook on a campfire and/or BBQ, and as there will be a group, I suggest we meet around 10 days beforehand at a mutually convenient time to arrange what food we want to take and share the task of getting it, and share the cost. A few big pots will be needed.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE JERRINJA PEOPLE: Each participant is asked to make a contribution of $100 to the Jerrinja people for sharing their culture and their time with us, and to defray their costs. If at least 10 people can pay this, some low income participants can come at concession rates. The group will be around 10-12 people (max 15).

Children are most welcome (for a donation only).

The last weekend, held in March was a wonderful success and was booked up quickly - so don't delay if you want to join this group.

INTERESTED? Contact Janet Hunt, (02) 6281 0252.

CONFIRMED BOOKINGS FOR THE WEEKEND (with payment of the $100) MUST BE MADE BY 11 November.

4. 26th Nov. Lunchtime seminar: Bruce Elder on 'Blood on the Wattle'.

Bruce Elder, author of 'Blood on the Wattle', will hold a lunchtime seminar at Woden Library, 12.30-1.30 on Thursday 26th November. Bruce has just published an updated edition of this history of the massacre of Aboriginal Australians by white settlers. 'This is the history that most of us never learned and do not want to know about,' writes Robert Willson in his review of the new edition in The Canberra Times (7 Nov 1998). 'Yet our wealth and lifestyle have all been achieved as a direct result of Aboriginal conquest and dispossession.'

That morning, at 9.30am, Bruce will take part in a ceremony at the Aboriginal memorial on the side of Mount Ainslie behind the War Memorial, to remember the Aboriginal people who died in this struggle.

All are welcome to both events. For further information, please contact Flo Grant, Tel 6231 4504.
