ANTaR (ACT) Update # 50 (Wednesday 30 September, 1998)

ANTaR ACT
Pre-election Up-date:

Items in this update:

  1. Dear ANTaR Supporters
  2. Vote below the line in the Senate
  3. Pre-election events

1. Dear ANTaR Supporters,

The response to the ANTaR $10 Pledge so far has been fantastic - thanks to all those who have given generously. We are using the funds to place ads in the Canberra press (Canberra Times and the Chronicle) and regional radio stations urging people to vote for genuine reconciliation and justice - and not forget the attacks on indigenous rights which this government has presided over. Mick Dodson, Tim Costello and Hazel Hawke have recorded the radio ads for ANTaR ACT. The ads are running on a number of radio stations between Newcastle and the Victorian border - and we were donated $50,000 worth of advertising airtime from a broadcasting network. David Pope kindly provided cartoons for the print ads.

But advertising is expensive - and more donations are welcome!!

The outcome of this election will be critical for indigenous issues - and the outcome of the ACT Senate election can have a critical impact regardless of who wins the election in the lower house. Please make your vote count for indigenous and social justice issues - and urge your family and friends to do the same.

ANTaR ACT will await the outcome of the election to determine our role and strategy for the future - and we'll keep you up to date on developments.

2. Vote below the line in the Senate

ANTaR suggests that you vote below the line on the Senate ballot paper to ensure that your preferences go to candidates or parties which support indigenous rights and social justice issues. If you vote above the line, the party you vote for has already nominated where their prefernces will go, and in some cases this may be to parties you don't wish to support.
