If you want to add more detail, or alternatively fax or write to Sen.
Harradine, some points you may wish to include are:
1. It is not your responsibility, Senator Harradine, to avoid a double
dissolution - that is the responsibility of the Government.
2. It is absolutely wrong to sacrifice the legitimate moral and legal
claims of Aboriginal people in order to avoid a race election. Doing so
will simply:
- facilitate the very prejudice and discrimination which Harradine claims
to be guarding against;
- signal yet again that indigenous rights are on the lowest rung when it
comes to considering the 'national interest'.
Even in Queensland the majority of voters, in voting Labour, Greens and
Democrats, signalled their opposition to racial discrimination and support
for WIK.
3. We as taxpayers reject that we should finance a third great land
grab by pastoralists.
4. A just resolution for Native Title depends on a negotiated outcome
- the NIWG has already tabled a number of models of negotiated settlements.
5. We encourage the Senator to reject outright this bill which will not
provide workability and equity in the spirit of co-existence and justice
for all.

2. Public meeting about the proposed Fitzroy Dam - Wed 24th June
**************************************
A public meeting will be held on Wed 24th June on:
"Issues surrounding the damming of the Fitzroy River in WA."
Speaker: Greens Senator Bob Brown.
The WA government wants to dam the Fitzroy River to provide water for
cotton growing.
Earlier this year Joe Ross, one of the Bunuba People of the West
Kimberley region of WA, led a canoeing expedition down the Fitzroy River
when it was in full flood. Bob Brown was invited along on the trip by
Joe. When in flood the Fitzroy is the second fastest flowing river in
the world. It has been estimated that the water would fill Sydney
Harbour every 24 hours. The Bunuba and other Indigenous Peoples of the
area are very concerned and have asked the SWAAG group and Bob Brown for
help.
Bob Brown's talk, accompanied by slides, about the proposal to dam the
Fitzroy River will be:
* Wednesday 24 June
* 7.30 pm
* Bogong Theatre, Gorman House
* Entry cost: $5.
* Tickets are available at the CAA Office, on the upper level of the
Griffin Centre, Bunda Street, Civic.
* An excellent Supper will be provided.
* Any profit will be sent to WA Aboriginal People for their
fighting fund.
Please encourage as many of your friends & work colleagues to come as we
don't have a large (or even small) publicity machine.
Organised by Community Aid Abroad (CAA) Solidarity With Aboriginal &
Torres Strait Islander Australia Group (SWAAG). For more information
please phone Angelika Lapsley on 6240 7866 (w).

>Help us STOP the JABILUKA Uranium Mine in KAKADU National Park
>Facts:
>1. The mine is against the wishes of the traditional
>indigenous owners, the Mirrar Gundjehmi.

>3. Uranium from Jabiluka feeds the nuclear fuel cycle worldwide: an
>industry increasingly recognised as unsafe and uneconomical.
>4. The European Parliament and the Australian Senate have formally
>condemned the proposal.
>5.. Kakadu is a World Heritage area.
> 6: Although a blockade is currently in place, construction has commenced.

6. Seeking interested southside ANTaR volunteers.
***************************************
Are there ANTaR supporters from the southside interested in forming a
southside "branch" of ANTaR to organise public meetings or events
southside in the lead-up to the federal election? Also, we could use some
advice about good venues for public meetings and/or events that ANTaR could
be part of. If you want to help, please contact us asap.
