Monday (30th Mar).
CONTENTS:

************************************* The ALP is in negotiations with the Howard Govt. in order to try and break the "deadlock" on native title. The Govt has also been in talks with Senator Harradine. Please take a minute to fax or email the ALP leadership and Harradine to urge them not to cave in over the Wik legislation. In particular, they should stand firm on the four main sticking points: the sunset clause, the threshold test, the right to negotiate provisions on pastoral leases, and subjecting the Bill to the Racial Discrimination Act.

*************************** As part of a National Day of Action called by the Mirrar Gundjehmi people, a rally will be held at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy (opposite Old Parliament House) at 11am on Sunday the 5th of April to protest against the Jabiluka uranium mine. Similar rallies are being held in every capital city around the country. The mine is being opened in clear contravention of the wishes of the Mirrar, who are the traditional owners of the land in which the mine is to be situated. A legal challenge to the validity of Energy Resources Australia's mineral licence, presented by Yvonne Margarula on behalf of the Mirrar, was rejected by the Federal Court on February 11. RALLY: The Canberra rally will be saying "No to uranium mining - not in Jabiluka, not anywhere! Defend native title! Land rights now!" and will feature a range of speakers. FILM SCREENING: The rally will be followed at 2pm by a showing of David Bradbury's film 'Jabiluka', which documents how the Mirrar people were forced into signing the Ranger uranium mine lease in 1979. The film will be shown at Manning Clarke Lecture Theatre 4 at the Australian National University - entry will be $5, or $3 concession, with the proceeds being used to help fund the campaign. Organised by Capmapign Against Racism. For further information, ring 6247 2424.
