Hi all, We're moving into a very busy period with lots of native title and
reconciliation events happening. This is a period when we really need to
demonstrate strong support for the principles of coexistence and
negotiation, and opposition to the Government's 10 point plan. Supporting
local ACT events is an important way you can help. Because of the number of
items we will put out a separate update on the Native Title Amendment Bill
returning to the Senate. Items in this update:
1. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for the National Folk Festival,
10-13th Apr. We need volunteers to help with a number of Antar activities/events scheduled for the National Folk Festival. We need: - bucketeers for the Native Title concert on Sat between 4-6pm - stall helpers, 9am-6pm over the four days (we need to set up a roster) - there is also a reconciliation Talking Circle (Fri 2pm) and a Native Title Forum (Sat 9.30am) which assistance will be required for. If you can help, please advise by return email, or contact Cate or Pam at CAA on 62574472. We need to build up ribbon numbers in readiness for the Folk Festival and other large events, so working bees are scheduled for each Tuesday from 5.30pm at the CAA office, 1st Floor, Griffin Centre, Bunda St, Civic. PLEASE COME ALONG AND HELP. If you missed hearing Jennie Clarke speak on Native Title at a recent Antar public meeting, you can hear her at the next CAA Samity seminar: **Is Native title worth defending? - discussion on the limitations of native title and the present parliamentary process.**
Speaker : Jennie Clarke, Lecturer in Law, ANU (the CAA Samity seminars are free talks on development issues, happening at the same time and place each week. Forthcoming seminars include: - Tues 12 May - The MAI (Multilateral Agreement on Investment) - for who's benefit?? Speaker: Krysti Guest, National Women's Justice Coalition). A rally against Mr. Howard's 10 point plan on Wik, is being organized by the Indi branch of DONT (Defenders Of Native Title) . The rally will begin at 10:00am on the 28th of March at QE2 square in Dean Street, Albury. From there the rally will be marching to Deputy PM, Mr Fischer's office. For further details ring John Browstein on (03) 57626475 or email Daniel Fogarty at foges@w140.aone.net.au.

The NIWG and the Kimberley Land Council are hosting The Statement, prepared by the Ngurrara claimants of the Kimberley region, includes a huge painting 8mx10m containing the works of 70 artists, many of whom are known nationally and internationally. The painting is the largest work of its kind. Song and dance that belong to the country represented in the painting will be performed by a group of adults and children involved in the preparation of the canvass. This is a special opportunity, so don't miss out. If you would like to reserve a seat please indicate your interest by return email or by contacting Cate Buchanan on 62574472. (For those unable to attend, the artists and the painting will also be in front of Parliament House between 8-9.30am on Mon 30 Mar - see item 7). Antar is putting together a walking team and a touch football team for the Walk Against Want on Sun 29th Mar. This should be a fun day, so if you are interested in participating please advise by return email or by contacting Cate Buchanan or Pam Drew on 62574472. Ngurrara claimants of the Kimberley region will be in front of Parliament House along with their huge 8mx10m native title painting, containing the works of 70 artists. This will be a unique chance to meet the artists and support their claim as well as providing a focus on native title by your presence at Parliament House as the Native Title Amendment Bill is about to be re-debated. PLEASE COME AND LEND YOUR SUPPORT! Antar ACT will hold its next public meeting at 7pm on the 1st April at the Workers Club. The subject is: "NATIVE TITLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT" with guest speakers Wadjularbinna, of the Gungalidda nation, Doomadgee community, talking about the Century Zinc mine; and Anna Reynolds of Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) speaking about Jabiluka. The meeting will be held at 7pm in the Fraser Room, upstairs at the Workers Club, Childers St, Civic. The bar will be open from 6.30pm. PLEASE COME ALONG. Kylie Waring has done a fantasic job of revamping the Antar national website. Please have a look at it at ( http://www.antar.org.au). We have also moved the Antar ACT website so it can be accessed at (http://www.antar.org.au/ACT). (oops! not quite true yet! Try in about a week)
