2. Chain of Hands a SUCCESS!
***********************

The Chain of Hands on the 4th March was a great success. Up to about 1000 people were involved and the Chain extended right round Parliament House. 2 buses and several cars came from Victoria, a small bus came from Bowral, and the rest were locals.

Brian Harradine stopped and was seen being part of the Chain for a few minutes. Media coverage appears to have been fairly good. Lots of people went over from the Chain to talk to the Cobar miners (apparently, the only group in Cobar prepared to lend the miners their minibus to come to Canberra without charging commercial rates was the local Aboriginal Land Council). Senator Margaret Reynolds put out a press release in praise of the rally.

Unfortunately, the Parliamentary administration refused permission for the chain to be stationary and for people to hold hands, so it was decided that people should walk slowly backwards in an exended line to symbolise the direction the Government is taking over the issue. Parliamentary security also forced people to take down banners and placards. So much for freedom of peaceful expression!

ANTaR and DONT wish to thank all who lent their support in making the event such a success.

3. 15th Mar: Acknowledgement of Apologies and Support Service and Tea
*********************************************************

An Acknowledgement of Apologies and Support Service and Tea will be hosted by the Canberra Aboriginal Church on Sunday 15th March 1998 at Lyons Church of Christ cr. Melrose Drive and Launceston St 5pm

Flo Grant has written in the invitation: "The Aboriginal peoples of the ACT and other regions have been greatly encouraged by the tremendous support given us from Sir Ronald Wilson, Church leaders from the various denominations and community groups who have come together over the past year or more in the spirit of reconciliation.

The Sea of Hands and the apologies have brought people together from the very diverse groups and we know that together we can change this nation as we acknowledge and claim our ancient heritage.

This service gives us, the Aboriginal people, the chance to say: 'Thank You'

All are welcome"

(Please bring a plate)
