1. Sea of Hands update.
**********************

The Sea of Hands is currently gearing up for a national tour which will help to increase the profile of ANTaR and support for native title and reconciliation. Experience of the Sea of Hands held in Canberra last year, was that it attracted national and international attention. Of particular interest was the international coverage of the last Sea of Hands which included:

* Network TV in the US;
* Satellite TV in Europe;
* TV in Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan & Hong Kong;
* Front page of The Guardian newspaper in the UK;
* Coverage in the London Times including a large colour photo on the back page;
* Opinion piece in the Irish Times.
Clearly there is strong international interest in the native title issue.

The current touring schedule for the Sea of Hands is:

Feb 21-22 - Melbourne (at Treasury Gardens for 2 days incl concert on 22nd).
Mar 8 - Adelaide (coinciding with the Adelaide & Fringe Festivals).
March 20 - Sydney (at Bondi Beach).
April 4-5 - Brisbane
Woolongong, Broome, Darwin - TBA

Please urge relatives or friends in those places to go along and give their support.

2. National round-up
********************

These are just a few of the things ANTaR is up to nationally:

NSW:

Sydney hosts the ANTaR National Clearinghouse in addition to a local ANTaR branch. There are also now 12 regional ANTaR groups in NSW. Upcoming events include the Sea of Hands (see above) and a celebrity fundraising auction and cocktail reception at the Bondi Pavilion on 20th Mar.

TAS:

* Camilla Cowley will be touring Tas in early March, sponsored by the Council of Churches;
* The CAA 'Walk Against Want' will focus on reconciliation as this year's theme.

VIC:

In Victoria DONT (Defenders of native Title) is the local ANTaR affiliated group, and has a central committee and 40 electorate branches throughout the state. The largest is in Bendigo with over 600 members. Recent events have included:

* a successful pastoralists tour by Camilla Cowley and Ian Perkins;
* two large public meetings in Melbourne over February.

SA:

ANTaR has recently opened a shopfront at Community Aid Abroad. The branch is gearing up for the Sea of Hands (see above) and events co-ordinated with the Fringe and Adelaide Festivals in early March.

QLD:

A new ANTaR branch is about to be launched in Townsville. The ANTaR branch in Brisbane are currently gearing up for the Sea of Hands in early April.

Other events include:

* Brisbane benefit concert on 4th April,
* O-Week info stalls,

******************************************************
3. Camilla Cowley on 'Australian Stories', Thurs Mar 5
******************************************************

Don't miss the ABC's 'Australian Stories' program on Thurs, 5th March which will feature pastoralist and native title supporter, Camilla Cowley.

**********************************
4. Santar (ANU) meeting Wed 18 5pm
**********************************

SANTaR (Students and Academics for Native Title and Reconciliation) will be holding a meeting at ANU at the Calypso Cafe at 5pm on Wed 18th Feb. If you're interested in helping with O-week activities please come along.

5. Sorry Books
**************

We've had a number of requests about obtaining a Sorry Book (ANTaR Update 21/1/98). The books are designed to hold about 1000 signatures and messages. If you think you can fill a book then you will need to fill out a registration form so that the distribution of books can be tracked. The forms can be obtained at the CAA office here in Canberra or by phoning the National Clearinghouse in Sydney on 95556138. The books are made from archival paper and will cost $20 each.

**********************************
6. Picket of NFF offices, Wed 18th
**********************************

For your information, the Trades & Labour Council is organising a picket of the National Farmers Federation offices in Brisbane Av, Barton on Wed 18th Feb between 8-10am. While this is not a native title focused event, it seems no coincidence that the calculated actions of the leadership of the NFF in precipitating conflict with the unions mirrors the NFF's divisive and conflictual approach to native title. The growing disaffection of farmers and pastoralists with the NFF leadership's approach is evidenced by the Rural Landholders for Coexistence group set up by Camilla Cowley and Ian Perkins (see item 3 above).

**********************
7. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!
**********************

Volunteers are urgently needed for upcoming events.

For the CHAIN OF HANDS (4th Mar) we need:

* people to donate/make cakes, muffins, fruit and other breakfast items for the many hundreds of hungry interstate and local participants;
* people to poster Tuggeranong, Woden & Belconnen.

For O-WEEK (23-28 Feb) we need stall volunteers.

For the NATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL (10-12 Apr) we need:
