ANTaR (ACT) Update # 28 (February 9, 1998)

Hi ANTaR supporters, Native title and reconciliation events and happenings are picking up speed, so over the next couple of months in particular we need helpers and volunteers in all manner of capacities. There are lots of events planned for the coming weeks. Please pass this information on to as many people as possible. We are in the process of updating the non-email mailing list and doing a huge mailout very shortly.

1. ANTaR Meeting WED 11 FEB 7pm

There is an ANTaR meeting this Wednesday at 7pm in the meeting room next door to the Community Aid Abroad office, 1st Floor, the Griffin Centre, Civic. ALL WELCOME!! Guest Speakers: Jenny Clarke, Lecturer in mining law and native title at the ANU and Phil Glendenning (ANTaR National Co-ordinator). There will also be updates and info on coming events - public forum, Sorry Day, film screening, Chain of Hands. There are plenty of ways for YOU to get involved and help out, so if you can't make the meeting e-maill in what you would like to help out doing.

2. RIBBON MAKING BEE TUES 10th FEB

There is a ribbon making bee at the CAA office this Tuesdauy at 5.3opm. We desperately need to stock up on ribbons because in the coming weeks we are going to be in a position to sell hundreds and hundreds of them. EVERY Tuesday for the next couple of weeks there will be a ribbon bee. BYO scissors! Call Pam Drew at CAA on 6257 4472 for more details

3. 'Dreaming under the Southern Cross' FREE CONCERT!! Feb 13
***************************************************

The concert will be held on Friday Feb 13 from 8.30pm at The Southern Cross Club, Woden. Bookings essential. The Southern Cross Club in asscoation with the National Indigenous Performing Arts Company and the National Multiciutral Festval presents: singer Robyn Green, storyteller Pauline McLeod, dancer Dorothea Randall, didge player Lewis Langton, singer/songwriter Johnny Huckle and the Trres Strait Islander Dancers. A night showcasing the diversity of indigenous cultures through song, dance and storytelling. Supported by Australians for Reconciliation.- Call 6283 7288 to book!!

4. National Multicultural Festival Interfaith Gathering, Sun 15 Feb.
5. Ceremony of Reconciliation and plaque unveiling, Sat 14th Feb

The last ANTaR Update included details for the Interfaith Gathering which were muddled with a separate event. The correct details for the two events are:

4. The National Multicultural Festival Interfaith Gathering, Sun 15 Feb will be held at Garema Pl. at 5pm. Sir Ronald will be speaking on the topic of Reconciliation. Further information, contact Jeanette Mathews 6295 9470.

5. A Ceremony of Reconciliation and plaque unveiling will occur on Sat 14th Feb at The Belconnen Churches Centre on Benjamin Way, Beconnen at 11 am. The ceremony will be addressed by the former head of ATSIC Dr Lois O'Donoghue and by Sir Ronald Wilson who headed the enquiry into "The Stolen Generation". Sir Ronald will unveil the plaque to be placed on the outside of The Belconnen Churches Centre which states: "This plaque acknowledges that the Ngunawal people were the traditional owners and carers of this Ngunawal country". The reconciliation ceremony will also be addressed by a Ngunawal elder and attended by Church and Aboriginal leaders. The brief ceremony is open to the public. 6. MINCHIN ALERT!!!!

Nick Minchin, 'Special Minister for State' has released a 28 page document entitled 'Fairness and Balance', which is a detailed overview of the Native Title Amendment Bill and the Senate Debate. If only it was fair and balanced - instead it represents another remarkable effort on behalf of the governemnt to defend its discriminatory legislation. If you're interested in obtaining a copy ring the Senator's office at Parliament House.

7. O-WEEK 23rd -28th FEB

O-week begins at ANU and UCAN on the 23rd Feb. ANU now has a group called SSANTaR (Students, Staff and Academics for Native Title and Reconciliation). If you can help in any way (volunteering on a stall during the week, providing resources on campus,) please call Jo Mettam on 6258 6916(h)

The Tent Embassy has asked if anyone is going up Mt Ainslie to look out for fallen euclayptus branches to make some shelters with. Please drop off to the Embassy.

9. NATIONAL FOLK FESTIVAL, APRIL 1998

The National Folk Festival have generously offered to host ANTaR events and actively promote native title and reconciliation themes at this years festival. Major scoop! We can also have a signifcant level of input into arranging speakers, forums, mc's, etc. If you would like to be involved in preparing for this please come along to the next meeting for this event on: 20th FEB at CAA office at 5pm or contact Pam Drew 6257 4472(w) or Cate Buchanan 6247 0164(h)
