=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= **COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT** **ABORIGINAL RECONCILIATION** **INTERFAITH GATHERING** In the week before it is disestablished as a Parish of The Uniting Church of Australia, The East Belconnen Church in Canberra is planning to hold a ceremony of reconciliation. By unveiling a plaque on the Belconnen Churches Centre, it will recognise the prior occupancy and care by Ngunawal people of the land on which Canberra is built. The ceremony will be addressed by the former head of ATSIC Dr Lois O'Donoghue and by Sir Ronald Wilson who headed the enquiry into "The Stolen Generation". Sir Ronald will unveil the plaque to be placed on the outside of The Belconnen Churches Centre which states: "This plaque acknowledges that the Ngunawal people were the traditional owners and carers of this Ngunawal country". The reconciliation ceremony will also be addressed by a Ngunawal elder and attended by Church and Aboriginal leaders. Canberra's political leaders are also being invited. The brief ceremony is open to the public and will be held at The Belconnen Churches Centre on Benjamin Way Beconnen at 11 am on Saturday 14th February 1998. People from other organisations in Canberra and other individuals who share a concern at the need for small concrete steps on the reconciliation path will be particularly welcome to join in this significant occasion. Enquiries to Bob Douglas 34 Nungara Place, Aranda. Tel 62490712 (W) or 62533138 (H) or Max Neutze 62516138 (H)
