**COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT** **ABORIGINAL RECONCILIATION**

**INTERFAITH GATHERING**

In the week before it is disestablished as a Parish of The Uniting Church of Australia, The East Belconnen Church in Canberra is planning to hold a ceremony of reconciliation. By unveiling a plaque on the Belconnen Churches Centre, it will recognise the prior occupancy and care by Ngunawal people of the land on which Canberra is built.

The ceremony will be addressed by the former head of ATSIC Dr Lois O'Donoghue and by Sir Ronald Wilson who headed the enquiry into "The Stolen Generation". Sir Ronald will unveil the plaque to be placed on the outside of The Belconnen Churches Centre which states: "This plaque acknowledges that the Ngunawal people were the traditional owners and carers of this Ngunawal country". The reconciliation ceremony will also be addressed by a Ngunawal elder and attended by Church and Aboriginal leaders. Canberra's political leaders are also being invited.

The brief ceremony is open to the public and will be held at The Belconnen Churches Centre on Benjamin Way Beconnen at 11 am on Saturday 14th February 1998. People from other organisations in Canberra and other individuals who share a concern at the need for small concrete steps on the reconciliation path will be particularly welcome to join in this significant occasion.

Enquiries to Bob Douglas 34 Nungara Place, Aranda. Tel 62490712 (W) or 62533138 (H) or Max Neutze 62516138 (H)

>David, this is a passage from Jo Mettam - I think she would like it to be
>distributed to ANTaR members...
>......We, the people who support Native Title, should take our lessons from the
>way Native Title rights have been won in the past. They have been won by
>the courageous fighting by people like Mabo, the Gurindji people and all
>those involved in the Tent Embassy for the past 26 years. To beat Howard
>on this issue, we have to organise and fight. University students in
>Canberra have been doing this for quite some time. The example that comes
>immediately to my mind is the students who, in 1972, marched to the newly
>established Tent Embassy to show their support of both the Tent Embassy and
>of Land Rights. In 1998, it's time to re-ignite that spirit. I am writing
>this as a first step to setting up an ANTaR club at the ANU. I am inviting
>everyone to a meeting to discuss ideas of how to set up this club. There
>is currently a club at the University of Canberra, and we will also discuss
>the future of this club.
>
>Organising meeting for ANTaR clubs at ANU and University of Canberra. All
>welcome. All ideas appreciated.
>Wednesday, February 4. 5:00 pm and the ANU Bridge (above the Uni Bar).
