HELP NEEDED

"The Gathering for Corroboree for Sovereignty at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy is now only two weeks away. The camp is still with the barest resources. We believe a great many people will be coming. In order to make a comfortable camp for so many honoured visitors, the Tent Embassy is in urgent need of the donation and loan of many items. Please search through your garages, your generosity and your sense of true history, and offer your assistance. All donated items can be dropped off at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, King George Terrace, opposite the front steps of the old parliament house. A receipt will be given for all items offered on loan and an undertaking of care. Help can be offered at regular Embassy meetings under the trees each Sunday at 11am.

Camping items: Shade cloth, hessian, tarpaulins, old blue tarps in any condition, plastic sheeting, blankets, ropes, tent pegs, tent poles, star pickets, lengths of timber, tools (hammer, nails, pliers, etc) .

Garden and digging: gardening forks, spades, shovels crowbars, lengths of hose and attachments. Any old or unwanted portable garden sheds would be invaluable.

Food provision: trestle and other tables, chairs, knives and cutlery and plates, etc, foodstuffs, loan of gas and other barbecues, buckets, pots, water containers, big barbecue plates.

Fireplaces: 44 gallon or other drums for fire places, lots of firewood.

Workshops and activities: boards, paints, poles, canvas, cloth for banners, brushes, poster paper, felt-tipped pens, stands and supports, partitions, anything else you can think of. Aboriginal posters needed to re-line Embassy walls, traditional garbage buckets with lids (to be used for storage).

Fire torches: strong sticks (eg tomato stakes) 1.5 metres, or more, cloth for wrapping, wire.

Services: First Aid tent and equipment. Anyone with first aid, nursing or medical skills.

Offers of assistance from persons with mechanical skills, eg to keep old cars running.

Fund-raising assistance: The Tent Embassy wishes to raise money and also commemorate the event with caps, badges and T-shirts. Please offer financial assistance or minimal-fee services for making these items. Funding for this event is very urgent. Ccontributions would be most welcome. These can be made at the Tent Embassy or paid direct into the Aboriginal Tent Embassy account, Commonwealth Bank, Northbourne Avenue, Canberra, Account Number:2919 1003 8107."

The Corroberee for Soveriegnty is fully supported by ANTaR. We appeal to you all to help wherever possible. It starts in the week of the 26th jan, till the 2nd Feb.

4. Nomination of Patrick Dodson as Australian of the Year

Last week 'The Australian' noted in an article about its 'Australian of the Year' award that Patrick Dodson was a front runner for this year's award. You may wish to help make this a reality by sending in a nomination in recognition of Patrick's immense contribution to reconciliation, and urging others to do likewise. It would also send an appropriate message to those politicians who are dragging the chain on the issue. Nominations must be in by the 21st January and you can either send in a form (printed in The Australian each day) or fax headed 'Australian of the Year' (02) 92883077. Nominations should include a reason for the nomination and the name and address of the nominator.
