Message from Tent Embassy Mob
=============================

The Aboriginal Tent Embassy and Supporters wish to thank ANTaR for the raising of funds towards the Gathering of the Elders in Canberra on January 26-Feb 2, 1998. These funds are precious, as the Embassy does not have financial resources.

Preparations so far include: The Exhibition Centre is arranged to be the 'overflow' camp site for the week. It is well appointed, with excellent ablutions facilities nearby, some shade trees, and some larger-scale shelter sheds in the event of very hot, windy or wet weather.

The invitation to Aboriginal people, and a special appeal to Elders for their visiting and messages, has gone out to about 900 Aboriginal communities, hostels, co-ops and other organisations throughout the country.

Extensive arrangements are under way for Aboriginal entertainment and ceremonial events.

The ACT government, the ACT Australia Day Council, the Exhibition Centre, ANTaR, AIATSIS Library, ACT for Reconciliation, Boomanulla Oval management, some of the food markets, the organisers of the Multicultural Festival and others have been giving assistance.

Funding remains a major task. Those who conceived and brought forward the plan for the Gathering have no experience nor connections within this area. We appeal for advice and assistance with this (amongst other useful things).

The Gathering of Elders invites not only Aboriginal but non-indigenous performers and entertainers to share in this event. The organisers have literally not had the time to address this large matter until now. Please all you artists and impresarios out there! - give us a hand, bring your knowledge and your connections, and help us connect with the local and regional entertainment industry.

Some of the practical things we need help with - lots and lots of firewood. Loan of trestle tables, chairs, awnings, shadecloth, tents. 44 gallon drums which can be cut in half for fire drums. Loan or low-cost rental of a cooler-trailer. Playthings donated for children. Someone willing to contact mechanical mates who could give a morning to help get cars in going order. The loan or donation of large pots or urns for mass water heating. People of carpentry skills to help build some shade shelters in which people do their debate. Star pickets, poles, planks, struts, hessian, tarpaulins etc. for shade and wind shelters.

We invite supporters to attend the regular weekly organising meeting, held under the trees behind the Aboriginal Tent Embassy (opposite the front of the Old Parliament House, on King George Terrace), at 11 A.M. EVERY SUNDAY MORNING.

There will be a meeting this coming Sunday December 21.
