1. Inidgneous Leaders Summit, Fri, 12th Dec: MESSAGES OF SUPPORT REQUESTED.
===========================================

The following is part of a press release by ATSIC Chairperson, Gatjil Djerrkura, announcing an Indigenous leaders summit in Canberra this Friday. We encourage members of this list to fax or email messages of support to those at the summit, particularly as they have secured a meeting with the PM at its conclusion.

Messages can be emailed to: sylvia.maseyk@atsic.gov.au or faxed to: (02) 6285 3603.

"Inidgneous Leaders Summit called by ATSIC"

ATSIC Chairperson, Gatjil Djerrkura, today announced that he is inviting Indigenous leaders to a summit to be held at Parliament House on Friday 12 Dec.

"Through this meeting, the Indigenous leadership will be demonstrating our unity, our legitimacy and our profound concern about current developments affecting the status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people..."

"Underpinning our discussions will be a focus on our rights - our rights as Indigenous peoples abd our rights as citizens... It is imperative that we secure constitutional and other forms of recognition for these rigts."

"We have sought and have been granted a meeting with the Prime Minister at the conclusion of our Summit."

2. Pauline: "Don't start the RACE without me."
============================================

And for a bit of comic relief, Pauline (if you see me now) Hanson put out a press release on the 5/12 simultaneously absolving herself from but not wanting to miss a race-based election. Noting a comment from Thailand reported on AM that "to racialise the election in such a way would confirm that what she (Hanson) said had something in it", she said:

"...the politicians and much of the media were trying to blame me for the division in Australia and yet now we face a race election and none of it has anything to do with me..."

"Native Title is about to explode in rural Australia - perhaps when that happens the government will see the folly of special treatment and race related policies..."

"Many outside Australia will be watching the next election and now race as an issue is clearly on the agenda, all I can say is, don't start the race without me because as the others campaign on race and highlight our differences, I will campaign on equality for all Australians and the need for us to be one people - bring on the election, let's see what Australians really think."

It's nice to see Pauline and the PM have so much in common...
