Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation

The Acting Company
present
"MAN FRIDAY"
by
Adrian Mitchell

Thursday 18th and Saturday 20th of December
Ralph Wilson Theatre, Gorman House

Most people have heard about the story of Robinson Crusoe. Shipwrecked on a tropical island, he is alone until the arrival of the man he calls Friday. This play by British poet Adrian Mitchell is the same story told from the other point of view - Friday's! The play is sad and funny, entertaining and provocative.

At a time when the Australian government is intent on passing a racist law, while at the same time refusing to acknowledge the damage done to the stolen generations, Mitchell's retelling of the popular Daniel Defoe story is particularly relevant.

So come and see Man Friday. All money raised will go to ANTaR (Australians For Native Title and Reconciliation).

Tickets Available from Community Aid Abroad, Griffin Centre, Civic and Radio 2XX, Kingsley St Acton (next to the Drill Hall Gallery at ANU). Phone 6249 4512 for more information. Tickets $5 and $10.

5. Senate internet petitions / other native title internet sites:
==0==0==0==0==0==

People may wish to investigate the growing range of internet petitions and native title related internet sites which have sprung up. The following information on some of these sites has been forwarded recently to this list and are in addition to the ANTaR local ACT and national internet sites which are listed with the ANTaR contact details at the end of this update.

* The Senate has agreed to accept petition signatures obtained over the Internet. Information and links to details of the Senate's procedures concerning email petitions are also provided at (http://www.austlii.edu.au/unsw/centres/ilc/) where you will find a petition on the Wik decision.

* The Democrats in the Senate have a petition on Native Title which you can sign, electronically, for submission to the Parliament at (http://www.democrats.org.au/democrats/campaigns/reconciliation/petition.htm l)

* New site: Land rights Queensland (http://www.faira.org.au/lrq/)

* If you would like more information about the Australians for Native Title campaign you can find details at (http://www.nativetitle.aust.com)

* You can also find details about Liberal politicians and others who do not support the legislation at (http://www.peg.apc.org/~greenleft/welcome.html)

* An anti racism (anti-Wik legislation) web site is now operational at (http://www.nativetitle.org) This is an interactive website. You fill in your name and address, and a fax is sent to the Prime Minister telling him what a bad boy he has been. You get to place ticks next to the paragraphs you want in the fax. This only takes 1 minute of your time too. So tell everyone who has never been an activist before. It's easier than ever to lobby the PM now that we have the Internet. I have put a lot of work into this system to minimize the amount of effort required on your part. Please visit the website now! There is serious talk of a double dissolution and an election on race issues. You need to act now!

* Or, send an email to the office of the Prime Minister John Howard telling him of the shame associated with the Australian Governments 10-point plan. This can be done thru (http://www.indiginet.com.au/defend.html)

happy internetting...

6. Senate debates on News Radio, on AM frequency 1440:
==0==0==0==0==0==

For those unable to attend the Senate debates, Parliamentary News Network will broadcast the Senate this week on:

Tues: 2pm - 6:30pm and 7:30-11.00 today (Tues);
Wed: 9:30am -1.00pm and 2.00 - 8:40pm;
Thurs 6.00pm - 11.00pm.
The broadcast schedule may be affected by changes in debate times.

Unfortunately, the order of business in the senate is not publicly available until the beginnings of each day and so you will also need to check on when native title debates are scheduled. If you need to find out you can phone for the order of business on 6277 3045. Question time is between 2.00-3.00.

7. Jatz Campaign
==0==0==0==0==0==

As reported last week, National Party member for Capricornia certainly has a way with words. He 'argues' that if compensation is to be paid to Aboriginal people under native title settlements, ATSIC and Aboriginal Legal Sevices should be abolished and complimented with the introduction of careful means testing of welfare payments. He said, 'Imagine if we'd done this years ago, all we would have had to give them is 20 bucks and a box of Jatz.'

ANTaR ACT urges you to write to the Prime Minister, John Howard, pointing out the offensive and discriminatory nature of Mr. Marek's remarks. Send your comments on a postcard cut from a packet of Jatz addressed to:
