From: apology@west.net.au (Anthony Shipley) Dear Participant, Today I received the 4,000th apology. It's a small start but sadly it seems that we still have a lot of time before our government will develop a sense of justice and duty. The names continue to come in, sometimes slowly, but every day there are at least a few. I receive many messages of support and thanks for making the list available. That also belongs to all of you who continue to pass the word around and who have publicised the site either on you web sites, in you email, by poster or by word of mouth. Thank you; your efforts and help gives others - like me - the determination and encouragement to carry on trying to make a difference, albeit just a small one. For those of you who haven't received an update like this before, I do it very seldom. If you'd prefer to not hear from me at all, please just reply to this message with the word NOMORE in the title (but before you go, thanks again for your participation). Now, the prime reason for this message. In trying to find other ways in which I can contribute to the reconciliation effort, I have become convinced that the government's 10 point plan must be stopped if at all possible. For those of you who agree with me, I am offering to provide resources to help you express your feelings. The group Australians for Native Title are encouraging people to fax Federal parliamentarians expressing their support for Native Title. Many of you might already have done so. I expect others might not have easy access to send faxes interstate. I am, therefore, offering to fax your messages (emailed to me) to as many parliamentarians as I can get addresses for. Because Telstra offer limited cost STD calls, I expect to be able to send hundreds of faxes at once. I will of course send your messages without modifications. I do ask that you include your full name and address. I will not make any use of that information other than for the purpose of sending the information, by fax, to Federal Parliamentarians (and especially to Senators because they have the opportunity to reject the bill). If you would like more information about the Australians for Native Title campaign you can find details at http://www.nativetitle.aust.com You can also find details about Liberal politicians and others who do not support the legislation at http://www.peg.apc.org/~greenleft/welcome.html If you don't have web access, let me know and I'll email the information to you. Finally, thanks again for your participation. regards anthony shipley Almost half of the Aboriginal people who died in custody and were investigated by the Black Deaths Royal Commission, had been removed from their families as children. This issue, the removal of children, will mean the school history books will have to be rewritten." - Kirsten Garrett, Background Briefing, Sunday, 11 February 1996 http://www.abc.net.au/rn/talks/bbing/bb960211.htm Take this opportunity to send your apology for what happened at http://apology.west.net.au Please also pass the message on to others who might like to participate too.

I can forward the full document to anyone who's interested) Ref.: ASA/C10 10 November 1997 Statement by Amnesty International's researcher on Australia, Dr. Heinz Schurmann-Zeggel, at a Press Lunch of the National Indigenous Working Group on Native Title on Australia?s Native Title Amendment Bill, London, Monday, 10 November 1997, Methodist Central Hall, Westminster Amnesty International has concerns that the Native Title Amendment Bill in its present form indicates the Australian Government's readiness to accept yet another potential breach of international human rights standards. In particular, our concern is that the current bill does not reflect expert human rights law advice, available to the government, that the bill may contravene Australia's commitments under, for example, the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD), as well as Australia?s Racial Discrimination Act...

PEOPLES MOVEMENT
ACTION ALERT - 10 November 1997
Your support required to combat institutionalised racism.
Please read and act as moved on this alert.
A.M.P. - POSITION ON CO-EXISTENCE OF NATIVE TITLE ...
AMP - AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST PASTORAL LAND HOLDER
The AMP Stanbroke Pastoral Company is now Australia's largest
pastoral land holder with 12.69 million hectares...
AN UNETHICAL WINDFALL PROFIT
While the Wik debate has been going on, AMP Stanbroke Pastoral
Company has been increasing its land-holdings. It now holds an
area twice the size of Tasmania. Are the Board members quietly
expecting to pick up a windfall profit - at the expense of the
interests of native title holders - by the lease upgrade
provisions in the Coalition's racist Native Title Amendments
Bill?...
A CLEAR STATEMENT FROM THE AMP BOARD
Well, here is the perfect opportunity for its Managing
Director and Board to demonstrate that the AMP is not in the
business of profiting from the suffering of Australia's First
Peoples.
We need a clear and unambiguous statement from the AMP Board
of Directors on whether or not they endorse the co-existence
of native title and pastoral lease on land within their
holdings. Please join our rolling action to get a statement of
opposition to the 10 point plan from the AMP.
There are two questions to be asked by policy holders,
customers and potential investors:
1. Does the Board of AMP endorse or reject the Coalition
government's racist 10 point plan?
2. Does the Board of AMP embrace the co-existence of
native title and pastoral lease on pastoral properties
held by its subsidiary AMP Stanbroke Pastoral Co.?
FUTURE ACTION UPDATES
Future updates on this action - and responses from the AMP
Board (if any) - will be posted at:

Send a message to the AMP Board through its head office in

If you are an AMP policy holder, customer or (potential)
investor please make special mention of that fact.

****ACT Greens and the Constitutional Convention****
Fiona Tito and Shane Rattenbury of the ACT Greens are seeking election as
delegates to Constitutional Convention. The Greens are committed to
achieving an Australian Republic by 2001. However, this is only the first
important step in constitutional change necessary for the new millenium.
We need a program for longer term reform to give us a Republic with just
foundations. The Greens want a Constitution which:
