Significant Professional Contributions:
 
 

1. Development of science policy in Australia as chair of the FASTS Policy Committee, which produced key policy documents in 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2006.  Introduced the successful "Science Meets Parliament" Day in 1999 for which he was awarded the Eureka Prize for Promoting Understanding of Science in 2004.

2. Advancement of optics in Australia, especially as AOS President (1993 - 1994) when Optics: Highlight of the Future led to optics becoming an ARC priority area from 1995 - 1997.

3. Advancement of physics in Australia via the Academy of Science National Committee for Physics (1992 - 1998, 2000 - 2003) and National Committee for Spectroscopy (1996 - 2005); the Australian Research Council Expert Advisory committees (2002 – 2003) and co-chair of the Linkage Infrastructure and Equipment Facilities committee (2003); the Australian Institute of Physics Science Policy Committee, ACT Branch (Chair 1996 - 2002) and Chair of the AIP Congress, 2005.

4.
