RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN PLASMA PHYSICS

The physics of plasma is a subject of intense research worldwide because of its potential application to a new form of clean power production - fusion power.

In Australia this exciting area of physics is being studied by members of the Australian Fusion Research Group (AFRG), a consortium of universities under the umbrella of the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE), using the H-1NF Heliac at the recently opened National Plasma Fusion Research Facility (part of the Major National Facilities Program of the Department of Industry, Science and Technology) in Canberra. The Australian Fusion Research Group comprises The Australian National University, The University of Sydney, Flinders University and The University of Canberra.

The Facility operates under the Major National Research Facilities Program, Department of Industry Science and Tourism. Travel funds for access to the H-1NF facility are provided by AINSE, and funds for diagnostic infrastructure have been provided by the Australian Research Council.
