A Summer School for senior undergraduates, graduate students and academic staff

with interests in plasma science and technology.

Plasma physics underlies much of our understanding of stellar and galactic structure; it determines the magnetospheric environment of the earth and other planets; it forms the research frontier in areas such as nuclear fusion, advanced accelerators and high frequency lasers and is being increasingly used in industry - notably in the fabrication of computer chips. This course will emphasise the intrinsic scientific interest of the plasma state of matter and will attempt to develop an understanding on plasma behavior in a thorough and systematic fashion.

Based on the recent text, "The Framework of Plasma Physics" by Richard Hazeltine and Francois Waelbroek, lectures will be presented by Professor Hazeltine with the assistance staff of the ANU.

There will also be a series of experimentally oriented lectures given by

The "Framework of Plasma Physics" contains the following chapter headings

  • The Nature of Plasma
  • Charged Particle Motion
  • Fluid Description of a Plasma
  • The Cold Plasma Model and Waves
  • MHD and the Drift Model
  • Vlasov Description of a Plasma
  • Binary Collisions
  • Collisional Transport
  • Turbulent Transport

A review of the book states

"The best physics textbooks express a point of view, and provide insights not found elsewhere. The book by Hazeltine and Waelbroeck is in this category. It is a superb book, unique in its presentations".

Course participants will receive a FREE copy of the text and there will also be some assistance available for the accommodation of interstate participants.

Travel subsidies for students attending this Summer School have been generously provided by the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering (AINSE)
