The New Materials and Complexity conference will provide an international forum for detailed discussion of emerging areas associated with the inter-disciplinary study of new advanced materials and complex systems.

The meeting is intended to instigate a long-term dialogue between Italian and Australian scientists working in the areas of complex materials and systems.

Selected lectures will be published in a special issue of Physica A

We are particularly keen to expose younger Australian and Italian researchers to this exciting interdisciplinary area of research.

It is our intention to provide a relaxed informal atmosphere to enhance discussion across the boundaries of the Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Geology and Biology.

The meeting will provide a forum for dissemination of advanced computataional techniques for materials, including the outcomes of the APAC-funded supercomputer Expert Program "Mesoscale Physics".

Ample time will be provided for in-depth informal discussion as well as seminar and poster presentations. A number of plenary lectures will be delivered by eminent scientists.

A special session, freely open to the general public, will be held on the topic of "Science at the Beach".

Conference Schedule:

The conference will open in Canberra at the well-known Shine Dome, Australian Academy of Science (Monday Noember 3, 9.00 am), before moving to the beautiful location of the Australian National University's field station at Kioloa on the south coast of NSW. Transport to and from Canberra will be arranged, leaving Canberra after the opening session on Monday morning November 3 and returning to Canberra Saturday morning, November 8. Atttendees are welcome and encouraged to stay on over the weekend at Kioloa after formal sessions are over if they can arrange their own return (assistance will be offered where possible).

Travel:

Travel to the conference is simplest if attendees arrive in Canberra before Monday morning, November 3. Canberra is readily accessible by air, road or train. Alternatively, late arrivals can travel directly to Kioloa. A regular bus service runs between Sydney and Termeil (the nearest stop; 15 minutes drive from Kioloa) from where attendees will be collected. Bus schedules can be found here or here.

Set in coastal eucalypt woodland, with unspoiled beach frontage the new facilities at Kioloa provide an outstanding forum for scientific discourse. The local organisers, Applied Mathematics, ANU, have held a number of annual meetings there and it is an excellent, relaxed environment, conducive to open scientific discussion.
